To All Bowdoin Students and Parents:
|
Given the substantial financial commitments that students and their families must make to pursue a course of study at Bowdoin, we have become increasingly concerned to find ways to protect the financial investment of Bowdoin families in the student's education. Of particular concern are those students who, through illness or accident, may be required to leave school in the middle of a semester, with the subsequent loss of funds already invested in that semester's fees. Accordingly, Bowdoin is pleased to offer an insurance program, The Tuition Refund Plan (T.R.P.), as a way of protecting that investment at a reasonable cost to parents.
The T.R.P. works in concert with the existing refund policy as published in the College catalog. Subscribers are assured an 80% refund throughout the term, even though Bowdoin's own refund policy may have expired at the time of withdrawal. This benefit applies to all medical withdrawals, subject to the terms of the policy. The chart below shows how T.R.P. works to complement Bowdoin's current refund policy for tuition and most fees:
|
| Coverage Schedule | | If the Withdrawal Occurs During the: | College Refunds: | The T.R.P. Refunds: | Student Receives: | | First Two Weeks | 80% | 0% | 80% | | Third Week | 60% | 20% | 80% | | Fourth Week | 40% | 40% | 80% | | Fifth Week | 20% | 60% | 80% | | Balance of Semester | 0% | 80% | 80% |
|
The refund schedule for board charges is slightly different, since it is based on a remaining-balance system. The percentages, however, are similarly applied. Refunds for students receiving Title IV financial aid will be calculated in accordance with Federal guidelines.
Bowdoin is providing this insurance on a voluntary basis for students and parents. If you are interested in participating for the academic year 2009-2010, please submit your online application and annual premium before the opening date of the College, September 3, 2009. Online applications cannot be accepted on or after that date. If you have any questions about the Tuition Refund Plan, please contact Dewar directly at (617)774-1555.
Sincerely,
Michelle A. McDonough Bursar |
