To All Bowdoin Students and Parents:

Given the substantial financial commitment that students and their families must make to pursue a course of study at Bowdoin, it is important for Bowdoin familiies to protect their investment. At Bowdoin, 20 students on average each semester are forced to take medical leaves of absence because of a sports injury such as a concussion, a bad bout of mononucleosis, problems with depression or anxiety, or other health related conditions beyond their control. Of particular concern are those students who may be required to take a medical leave in the middle of a semester and forfeit a substantial portion, if not all of the payments made toward that semester's tuition and fees.

As a way of protecting your investment at a reasonable cost, Bowdoin is pleased to advise you of an insurance program, the Tuition Refund Plan (TRP), administered by A.W.G. Dewar, Inc. Premiums for both the fall 2014 and spring 2015 semesters range from $328.00 to $417.00 depending on costs insured, please see the application page for detailed information regarding premiums.

The TRP works in concert with the existing refund policy as published in the College catalog. Subscribers are eligible for a 100% refund throughout the term, even though Bowdoin's own refund policy may have expired at the time of withdrawal. The 100% benefit applies to medical withdrawals in which the student is hospitalized for 2 consecutive days. If the student is not hospitalized for the medical condition forcing withdrawal, the benefit is 60% of insured fees. All claims are subject to the terms of the policy. The chart below shows how TRP works to complement Bowdoin's current refund policy for tuition and most fees:

The refund schedule for board charges is slightly different, since it is based on a remaining-balance system. The percentages, however, are similarly applied. Refunds for students receiving Title IV financial aid will be calculated in accordance with Federal guidelines.

Please read the coverage section thoroughly. This insurance is offered on a voluntary basis for students and parents and Bowdoin does not benefit from your participation. If you are interested in participating for the academic year 2014-2015, please submit your online application and annual premium before the opening date of the College, Thursday, September 4, 2014. Online applications cannot be accepted on or after that date. If you have any questions about the Tuition Refund Plan, please contact Dewar directly at (617)774-1555.

Sincerely,

Matthew P. Orlando
