To Our Students and Families
As educational costs increase, Earlham College has a concern for the student who suffers serious illness or injury and has to withdraw before a semester is completed. In many instances this means not only the loss of time invested in studies, but the loss of the semester costs including financial aid.

This letter is to advise you of an insurance program, the Tuition Refund Plan (TRP), which will minimize financial loss. This elective insurance plan provides coverage for Tuition, Fees and Room when a student is forced to withdraw due to illness or injury. The costs insured for the 2009-2010 Academic Year could total up to $38,764.00.

This Plan significantly extends the College refund policy. You are assured of a 100% refund throughout the semester (60% through TRP if the withdrawal is due to a mental/nervous disorder) even after the College refund period expires. In effect you will not pay for courses you may need to repeat.

Please refer to the College catalog regarding the policies governing room refunds. Refunds for students receiving financial aid will be assessed in accordance with Title IV refund guidelines as detailed in the catalog.

Above examples do not reflect financial aid which may reduce student net cost and both the College and TRP refund. Student net costs do include student loans. Students withdrawing after the 10th class day are often still responsible for repaying student loan disbursements already received. Insurance proceeds can be used to reduce student loan obligations.

The College is pleased to offer the Tuition Refund Plan as an option to our students and parents. We suggest that you carefully read the coverage section. Those who wish to participate online must submit their application and payment before August 26, 2009. You may contact A.W.G. Dewar, Inc. at (617) 774-1555 if you have questions.

Sincerely,

Cathy Habschmidt
Controller
