July 2010
Carnegie Mellon Students and Parents: |
Given the current cost of education, we are concerned about students who suffer a serious illness or accident and must leave Carnegie Mellon before the semester is completed. In many instances, these circumstances mean the loss of time invested in course work and the loss of the semester's payments.
We want to tell you of an insurance program, the Tuition Refund Plan (TRP), which will minimize the financial portion of such a loss. This elective insurance plan provides coverage for tuition, specified fees, and room and dining charges. The anticipated costs insured for the 2010-2011 academic year are as follows:
| First Year Students Fall 2010 Campus Resident |
Tuition, Activity, Orientation, Technology, Port Authority, and Media Fees, Room and Dining |
$52,886 |

This Plan complements the university's published Tuition and Fees Adjustment Policy. The coverage assures a 100% refund throughout the semester (60% through TRP if the withdrawal is due to a medical/psychological illness). This is especially beneficial if a student must withdraw and later returns to repeat a semester. In effect, there is no additional cost to repeat lost academic units.
Please refer to the Undergraduate Catalog or the Tuition Adjustment Policy from The HUB Website at http://www.cmu.edu/hub/tuition/adjustment.html for the policy, which includes housing, meal plan and fee adjustment information. These fee policies are applicable whether or not you enroll in the TRP.
Participation in the TRP is entirely optional. We suggest that you carefully read the coverage section concerning the Plan. It is vital that those wishing to apply online, submit their application before the first day of classes, August 23, 2010. If you have questions, please call A.W.G. Dewar, Inc. at 617-774-1555 or email trp@dewarinsurance.com.
Sincerely, Assistant Directors of Enrollment Services The HUB |
