Dear Students and Parents:

Given the substantial financial commitment that students and their families must make to pay for a Tufts University education, we have become increasingly concerned about students who, due to illness or accident, may be required to leave school during a semester. Not only does this mean the loss of time invested in studies, but also the loss of funds already invested in that semester's costs. Tufts University is pleased to offer an insurance program, the Tuition Refund Plan (TRP) through A.W.G. Dewar, Inc., as a way of protecting your investment at a reasonable cost. The annual premium for a campus resident student is $323.00. For students living off-campus, the premium is $256.00. Students participating in Tufts Study Abroad Programs may purchase coverage for $329.00.

TRP is a private insurance program that supplements Tufts University's refund policy as published in the University catalogue and website. Subscribers are eligible for a refund throughout the term, even though Tufts' own refund policy may have expired at the time of withdrawal. A full 100 percent TRP refund applies only to medical/physical withdrawals. Withdrawals for medical/mental health reasons are insured at 60 percent of the costs. Costs covered by the TRP program include tuition, room, board, and mandatory fees.

The chart below shows how TRP responds to medical/physical withdrawals to complement the University's current refund policy. Students who are required to withdraw for medical reasons are entitled to a tuition and room charge credit in accordance with the following schedule:

Participation in the Tuition Refund Plan is entirely optional, and the University's refund schedule is applicable whether or not you enroll in TRP. Should you decide to participate online, you must submit the application and payment before the first day of classes, September 3, 2013. Online applications cannot be accepted on or after that date. If you have any questions about TRP, please contact A.W.G. Dewar directly at (617) 774-1555.

Sincerely,
