Dear Macalester Students and Parents:

I would like to bring to your attention a tuition refund plan (T.R.P.) which will be offered to Macalester students again this year by A.W.G. Dewar, Inc. This is a private insurance program that supplements Macalester's refund policy. It insures the refund of one hundred percent of tuition, fees and applicable room and board charges if due to illness or accident, a student takes a leave of absence or withdraws after the beginning of the fall or spring semester. The insured costs for the 2010/2011 academic year are $49,124 for students living on campus and $40,046 for those living off campus. Please note that the insurance covers full costs for financial aid recipients as well. This can assist you in repaying outstanding loans, in addition to crediting grants and scholarships for future use.

The chart below indicates how this program supplements the College's own refund schedule for a semester's charges should you withdraw due to illness or accident:

(1) Please refer to the College catalog regarding room and board refunds.
(2) As indicated in the coverage section, T.R.P. refunds are smaller in the case of leaves of absence or withdrawals due to mental, nervous, or emotional disorder. The maximum benefit available under the Plan is 60% of insured fees less any refund or credit due you from the college.

Participation in the Tuition Refund Plan offered by A.W.G. Dewar is entirely optional, and the College's refund program is applicable whether or not you enroll in the T.R.P. We urge you to read the coverage section and consider the suitability of the T.R.P. for you. Should you decide to participate in the Dewar Plan online, you must submit the application and payment to Dewar before the opening day of classes, September 7, 2010. Online applications cannot be accepted on or after that date.

If you have questions about the Plan, please address them to A.W.G. Dewar at 617-774-1555.

Sincerely,

Mary Johnson
