University of Notre Dame

Academic Year 2013-2014

To Our Students and Families:

With the level of education costs increasing, we have had a concern for the student who suffers a serious illness or accident and has to leave the University before the semester is completed. In many instances, it means not only the loss of time invested in studies but also the loss of the semester's costs.

We are pleased to advise you of an insurance program, the Tuition Refund Plan (TRP), which will minimize the financial portion of the loss. This elective insurance plan provides coverage for Tuition, Room and Board charges. Accordingly, the costs insured for the 2013-2014 academic year average $57,117.

This Plan extends and enhances the University's published refund policy. You are assured of a 100% refund throughout the term (60% through TRP if the withdrawal is due to a mental health condition). This is especially beneficial when you are forced to withdraw and then return for a later term. In effect, you will not have to pay to repeat lost credit hours. The chart below illustrates how the Tuition Refund Plan complements our refund schedule for Tuition charges.

If the Withdrawal
Occurs During:
First day of classes Tuition & Room and Board 0% 100%
Second day to end
of Semester
ProRata Up to Maximum
of 90%
Balance 100%

Note: Please refer to the Undergraduate Bulletin of Information for the University's refund policy on Room and Board charges.

We are pleased to recommend the Tuition Refund Plan as an option for students and parents. We suggest that you carefully read the coverage section concerning the Plan. It is vital that those who wish to participate online submit the application and payment before the opening date of school. Applications cannot be accepted on or after this date.
